Are you ready for Beakerhead?
For anyone who hasn't heard of Beakerhead, or is unsure of what it is, Beakerhead is the newest Calgary Festival. It is a week of fun and spectacular events held all over the city. More than just a schedule of events, it is a time and place where engineers become artists and artists get technical, science hits the streets and ingenuity is everywhere. The city becomes a giant laboratory. #letgo #beakerhead
The brain child of Jay Ingram of the CBC's Daily Planet TV show, the first annual Beakerhead was held last year in Calgary. It was a huge success with over 65,000 people participating. They climbed a 40 foot rocket ship, watched a robot band, sampled "engineered eats", sang with Commander Chris Hatfield and viewed a catapult competition.
This year it is much bigger. Over 50 events are planned over the five days with over 90 presenters. Beakerhead is hands on, and citywide. Everyone is encouraged to take part. There is engineered art and backyard contraptions; community challenges and international ingenuity competitions, public performances and creations. And much of it is FREE!! I just looked at the schedule for September 11th and 17 of the 24 events are FREE!
